can't use Slack at all on this machine after switching from `nouveau` to `nvidia-drivers`

Upon starting `slack`, a black window briefly flashes open and then disappears immediately.

(Yes I know my version is newer than the version in Funtoo's tree — the upgrade was precipitated by the problem I am reporting with `slack`, but didn't fix it. Newer version seems to work just fine with fewer random buggy glitches than the old in-tree one, fwiw; so maybe we ought to upgrade.)
