Basically we had a user that ran into issues trying to get nouveau running. They were trying to get nouveau running because the default nvidia-drivers did not support their legacy NVIDIA card.

This issue is about considering the possibility of using nouveau by default – nouveau would be preferred if it is demonstrably more compatible with more NVIDIA cards by default. Then if users want more performance, they could opt in to the commercial drivers that support their generation of card.

This is more straightforward than uninstalling nvidia-drivers in order to get nouveau to work, which is not a very intuitive thing to have to do on an initial install. Ideally, we want things to "just work" by default.
