Perhaps this is not an easy fix, in which case the user isn't much affected.  It just seems like an unnecessary step in the install

Just something that occurred to me when installing fresh this weekend.  Portage should already know that we're running intel so perhaps it should bring in this important package sys-firmware/intel-microcode
