In recent discussions with users in Discord in the #general and #install-help channels, many are on 1.4 Funtoo installs and want to go to next.

From various users feedback and experiences during live support, it is not apparently clear the complexities, unpredictable nature, level of effort, and lack of official support when upgrading a Funtoo 1.4 system to next.

Currently the only reference I could find is on the Funtoo Install/Introduction "Current Release" section which states:

The current release of Funtoo Linux is next, sometimes referred to as next-release. This is actually a (mostly) rolling release with an emphasis on being current. We also have 1.4-release available, which is a rolling release with an emphasis on long-term stability. However, we recommend for all users to use next if possible and consider 1.4-release to be a legacy release unless you have very specific needs for something in 1.4-release.

Also the officially announcement for next at https://forums.funtoo.org/topic/4970-announcing-next-release/ has some good language around the dangers of upgrading from 1.4 to next that could be leveraged.

Some users have requested this be more emphasized somewhere. Perhaps strategically added a Wiki warning or important note in the install guide: https://www.funtoo.org/Help:Funtoo_Editing_Guidelines/Tips_and_Warnings will help users quickly understand the lack of support going from a 1.4 to next release.

Alternatively a fully dedicated page to the topic could be written and linked in a warning/important note in the install guide.

This improvement issue is meant to to track and develop the ideal, most concise, and easily discoverable documented solution to help guide new and existing users going from 1.4 to next release.
