The more I think about how to organize the media-kit, the more I realize that there are packages that we'll want to have eventually, but they are not a priority right now. The logical conclusion is that there are really 'core' media packages and 'optional' media packages.
By creating the media-extra-kit, we could move there many of the packages we are not fully supporting right now and keep on media-kit the core packages on which we'd concentrate on making sure they are fully supported and updated/autogenerated before we worry about the media-extra-kit.
This doesn't meant that there wouldn't be any fixes and updates on the packages moved to media-extra-kit, but as a first step, those would be mostly static ebuilds and they would be fixed when requested, but not as proactively as they would be in the core media-kit, until media-kit is in good shape.
