During the LiveCD effort, it was discovered that a number of modules were necessary to allow the correct identification of the image root, its loading, and the loading of the squashfs image with an overlay configuration. Those modules are: squashfs, overlay, hfsplus, isofs, udf, loop and crc32_generic.
My first thought was that these are very basic and useful modules, so I included them directly to genkernel. However, that means all systems with a default configuration will have these extra modules in their initramfs, which are probably unnecessary.
This issue is to discuss alternative solutions to the LiveCD needs, or maybe how to allow for more control of the modules included in the initramfs.
