      1. In VLC: Tools > Preferences > Video. Set the Display Output to "OpenGL Video Output"
      2. Play a video.

      The issue is intermittent. HD video seems to trigger the problem more often.

      Suggestion for next time: try to run dmesg -w in an SSH session.

      Could be:
      * Bad driver in kernel or xorg (kernelspace should not hang)
      * VLC bug (I have yet to have a problem in another application, and I run many desktop applications. glxgears runs fine too.)
      * QT bug

      Video hangs, audio loops, then black screen, then the system goes unresponsive. It's impossible to switch to a virtual console. The rescue SSH session I had open on a remote system also hung. Pinging the host from the remote system didn't work either, so this was a hard hang that required resetting the system.

      So far, the problem seems to be limited to VLC's OpenGL video module. Also, this was an existing problem before core-gl-kit-2.0. I didn't look into it much until now. (Workaround is to set VLC video output to the older-school XVideo.)

      (See repro steps and facts for hardware and driver info.)
