When filesystem of / is BTRFS, there's a need to have a rootflags item in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. There's no support in /etc/boot.conf, that is a commented explanation.

But if you add :

params += rootflags=subvol=@root where @root is the subvol Id of the partition then it works.
