      FL-8480 & fl8186 are related issues. using the undead2live page & cd remastering page on my wiki personal journal you can enable overlayfs in gentoo minimal amalgamation with undead usb, however they dont use overlayfs either last i checked. overlayfs is essential to modern live ISO on machines with tight ram space limitations.

      so cdroot kernel flag has genkernel load the live cd section of options.  it doesn't enable overlayfs however which forces the entire live cd to load to ram.  overlayfs leaves the live cd on the live cd, and creates a COW drive to send needed changes to ram consuming much less ram @ install time.
