    • Impacts every user who has dev-db/mysql currently installed on their systems. This is confusing for users. "Normal" impact since we have alternatives (mysql-community and mariadb.)

Funtoo currently offers dev-db/mysql, dev-db/mariadb and dev-db/mysql-community, the latter one corresponding to the Oracle MySQL Community Edition.

dev-db/mysql has not been maintained and there seems to be no intention on maintaining it. Not one, but 2 well maintained compatible replacements are currently available.

The only obstacle to just going ahead and simply removing the package is that some other ebuilds "mention" it (not necessarily depend on it):

      • dev-db/mariadb
      • dev-db/mysql-community
      • dev-db/mysql-connector-c
      • dev-db/percona-server
      • kde-apps/akonadi
      • media-sound/amarok
      • dev-python/mysql-connector-python
      • sci-misc/tango
      • virtual/libmysqlclient

I believe every mention to dev-db/mysql can be safely replaced with dev-db/mysql-community, thus keeping the option open to the user on whether to use Oracle MySQL or MariaDB, while clearing the way to removing the package dev-db/mysql itself.
