The solution I want to implement is to cache the modules needed for boot and write this to a file in /boot which genkernel can read and use if it is available. if this results in it being able to mount the root device then it can proceed without loading ALL the modules.

At boot time, genkernel always loads very many modules which is unnecessary and not a good idea. It is helpful on first boot, but on successive boots on systems with unchanging hardware, it is not ideal.
