Consider bringing back dynamic slot functionality into Portage and using it for kernel modules, such as nvidia-drivers, so that it installs modules for different kernels. The tricky part is that it also installs a bunch of stuff that isn't a kernel module, so that thing isn't slotted. So maybe split it into a slotted kernel module and non-slotted ebuild? Would seem to make sense.
