Currently, it appears that emerge/ebuild does not "sync" after copying new package data to disk. This should be done to ensure data integrity, particularly for filesystems like XFS that journal metadata and not data and allocate data blocks lazily.

/bin/sync should be called after every package has been merged and Portage metadata updated. This can be enabled as a post-merge action in the Portage code.
