We currently use packaging.version within the majority of autogens in kit-fixups to ensure we're always getting the actual latest version. It works perfectly fine for most use cases, but if we try to use gentoo-style versions, (most notably, if we try to use patchlevels, see https://bugs.funtoo.org/browse/FL-9440) it fails to sort them properly.

To address this, we should consider replacing packaging.version with a custom parser of gentoo-style versions. Ideally, it should have a similar API to packaging.version to make migrating to it trivial.
