After updating from freetype-2.6.3-r1 to 2.6.5, my fonts look much worse in Gnome. I tried adjusting with eselect fontconfig|infinality|lcdfilter to no avail. Reminded me of the terrible font rendering of linux past. Masking 2.6.5 and rolling back to version 2.6.3-r1 restored my fonts to their previous state.
