      Description

Back into 2004 a group of people living in Quebec City started Gentoo-Québec. Those guys published a lot of documentation about Gentoo. Documents were in French and created with Latex. Some years later, let's say around 2009, they were converted to MediaWiki.

A new group was created in 2010. It was Funtoo-Québec and a new French wiki was born. Now in 2014 it turns to be more and more difficult to maintain its accuracy. People have less free time.

That is why this issue is a request for supporting foreign languages in official wiki. That could be done like Gentoo wiki does. When a version of a page is available in a foreign language, a link is active in the header. Example :

      /Funtoo_Linux_Installation (original English wiki)
      /Funtoo_Linux_Installation/fr (French version)
      /Funtoo_Linux_Installation/de (German version)

      ...and so on...

Thus it could be easier to provide documentation in different languages. Members only have to translate in their language and the administrator adds the foreign version when ready.

Some great work have been done until now. Funtoo wiki is more colorful and templates quite easy to use. Adding foreign languages is a plus.

Does it sound good to make this issue a page in FLOP category in wiki ?

Yes. I think this is a very good idea. You should consider making the page in the Wiki Development category of the wiki instead of the FLOP category.

I guess the first article that we should translate would be the article explaining the translation steps?

          I do think it's mandatory.

Let's wait until Daniel comments this request for foreign languages support.

The original idea for foreign languages is that it is much easier for Funtoo to focus on English, which is a first language or second language for many, than to focus on translations. Translations do tend to become out-of-date as compared to the original document. I can look into wiki best practices for keeping these in sync.

I am open to the idea.

It's a matter of fact that for many of us English is a second language. English documentation is and will always be the most up to date one. I've been in the computer field since 1968 mostly in IBM environment and all our references were in English.

I understand that support of foreign languages is not and must not be a priority. It's not necessary to translate everything. We perhaps can dress a list of hottest subjects.

I am now supporting translations on the Funtoo wiki, starting with official install docs.

You can place translations of Install parts at /Install/(lang)/PartName

See this for the English format:
